The Rise and Rise of Cybersecurity

We are living in a technically-advanced world where so many things are automated and driven by artificial intelligence. The rise in technology has been accompanied by a rise in cybercrime. On one side, you have ‘script kiddies’ who release ransomware with minimal thought or effort, and on the other side, there are ‘state-backed’ hackers, who use cybercrime as a form of war. The fact that cyber threats now permeate every part of society means cybersecurity is only growing in importance.

Cybersecurity is the collection of practices and procedures that protect computers, networks, servers, applications, and more from any loss of information that is confidential or crucial. A data breach that includes the theft of confidential, proprietary, or sensitive data, is a crime as it results in the damage of computer systems. Data breaches are also a violation of property rights, as they can include the theft of source codes, customer’s personal information, client transaction records, etc. Theft of this kind impacts the whole business of the enterprise. Cybersecurity is so important now because we are all reliant on so many devices that are connected to the internet. Organizations, both public and private, depend on technology and the internet and hence, are prone to cyber threats. This is where cybersecurity plays a defensive role, keeping information and systems safe and secure from malicious activities. The adaptability of the cybersecurity workforce is incredibly important as their skills help our data remain secure.

Ransomware is one the of biggest threats to business enterprises as well as individual users. Criminals often practice ransomware attacks where they encrypt the data and then demand ransoms in order to unencrypt it for the user. According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), ransomware is one of the biggest cyber threats. [13] By having their data backed up and implementing robust cybersecurity strategies, organizations can reduce their systems from being vulnerable.

The Centre for Cyber Safety and Education in their study on Global Information Security workforce revealed that more than 1.8 million cybersecurity workers will be needed by 2022. [12]

In fact, a report by Burning Glass Technologies showed that 84 percent of cybersecurity jobs require a degree in cybersecurity, of which 23 percent of jobs prefer candidate with a master’s degree.
