ECCU 505: Introduction to Research and Writing for the IT Practitioner

One the major challenges in IT Security and Leadership today is the lack of communication and research in presenting a new threat to a team of IT professionals. This course enables you to conduct proper research to be able to support your case with relevant, up-to-date information. Furthermore, being able to properly converse with a diverse population in an appropriate fashion using the research available to you via internet is vital in directional management today.

Purpose of Class:

This foundational core course introduces students to fundamental English writing skills and research methods also including: APA style writing, citing sources, determining when a website is credible, effective communication, outlines, and collaboration. Students will write/present portions of the above in the course in various formats.

Course Learning Outcomes:

Students who successfully complete this class will be able to:

  1. Acquire appropriate communication skills
  2. Display how to navigate and use available resources
  3. Determine when a website is credible for use in research and writing
  4. Learn how to overcome obstacles when writing
  5. Demonstrate considerate critiquing
  6. Develop an ability to review and write a comprehensive paper with reference page
  7. Engage in group discussions (collaboration) and activities to develop critical perspectives, a clear sense of audience- in an effective manner
  8. Develop critical attitudes toward media and recognize propaganda
  9. Demonstrate proper citing of sources
