5 Ways Online Classes Are Better Than Classroom Training

online degrees

It is predicted that by 2019, over 50% of all classes will be virtually conducted.[1] While many educational institutions understand the significance of this trend and are staying up-to-date with the times, there are still many that have not given their students the opportunity to experience the ease of attending an online class.

As more students are pursuing academic degrees, educational institutions are beginning to realize the importance of adapting to the diverse requirements of the massive, expanding student population. Some are realizing that in order to educate a wider population, limitations must be removed.

Distance education first began in 1728, when Caleb Philipps used the Boston Gazette to find students willing to learn via mailed lessons. Since then, distance education has been slowly and steadily growing with more than one in four students currently attending a distance education course.[2]

However, nowadays, distance education means online education, where virtual classes are conducted through videos, emails, and conferences, making the whole process as effective as classroom learning but more convenient.

Below are five ways online education is better than classroom training.

1. Self-Motivated – Better Worker

According to Business Dictionary, “People with self-motivation can find a reason and strength to complete a task, even when challenging, without giving up or needing another to encourage them.” In fact, an academic study from the University of Jaffna revealed that there is a direct, positive connection between self-motivation and better on-the-job performance.[3]

An online course requires high amounts of self-motivation and discipline. As the courses are self-paced, it is entirely up to the student to keep up with the assignments and coursework. This requirement for self-motivation means to future employers that students able to keep up with online, self-paced workloads have demonstrated superior motivation and determination.

2. Encouraged Participation – Regardless of Differences

Students often find themselves hiding in the back of a classroom in order to avoid being called on by a teacher. In fact, according to a survey conducted in the UK, 82% of university students suffer from stress and anxiety.[4] However, online classes have become a safe-haven for those who fear spatial proximity, as many often find it easier to communicate online than in-person, consequently encouraging more participation from more students.

3. Wide Networking – Socializing

The assumption that virtual students have no social interaction is baseless. Online classes allow virtual students to interact with instructors via various communication methods and even gives the student the chance to virtually meet a wider range of people – people from different countries, ethnicities, and backgrounds— increasing the diversity of their networking opportunities.

4. Self-Scheduled – Great for Working Students

A report by the National Center for Educational Statistics shows that bachelor degree holders earn approximately 64% more than what a high school graduate would.[5] However, a survey conducted by Citigroup and Seventeen magazine shows that parents are more likely to pay for a child’s phone bill than their college education.[6]

Today, students often find themselves pursuing a college education AND working full-time or part-time jobs in order to pay for their education. Obligations such as these often result in students being unable to sit for regular classes due to time and location constraints.

Online education allows students to take on additional obligations at work and home, as the student now has access to a wide variety of flexible schedules from virtually anywhere.

5. Cost Effective – Opportunity Cost

Quite often, traditional education involves transportation, housing, and other essentials. Apart from being a time constraint (for working students) it can actually be quite a heavy burden on one’s wallet.

An online education gives you the opportunity to save on extra living and travel expenses while only requiring a standard network connection giving students the opportunity to attain a degree from recognized universities in other countries while enjoying the comfort of home.

Online or distance education allows collaboration between students and teachers, the beginning of professional relationships, and flexible schedules for a busy students, along with many educational opportunities.

EC-Council University offers several online programs in cybersecurity including a Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science in Cybersecurity. These online programs at ECCU will give you the opportunity to earn an American degree from a university accredited and recognized by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC), from the comfort of your own home.
